Job Description

A small stealth biotech company in downtown Seattle is seeking a highly motivated Scientist or Senior Scientist to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for protein expression, purification, characterization, and analysis, with a focus on protein-protein interactions, biophysical techniques (e.g., BLI, SPR), and coordination of internal and external (CRO) work. Prior experience with antibodies and bispecifics is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Protein Expression and Purification:

  • Design constructs for recombinant protein expression in bacterial, insect, or mammalian systems.
  • Optimize protocols for high-yield and high-purity protein production.
  • Perform purification using techniques such as affinity chromatography, ion exchange (IEX), hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC).

Protein Characterization and Analysis:

  • Conduct biophysical studies using BLI (Bio-Layer Interferometry) and SPR (Surface Plasmon Resonance) to study protein-protein interactions.
  • Perform quality control assays including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering.
  • Analyze protein stability and aggregation using advanced techniques like SEC-MALS or differential scanning fluorimetry.

Antibody and Bispecific Development:

  • Express and purify monoclonal antibodies and bispecific molecules.
  • Characterize binding affinities and functional properties of antibody-based therapeutics.

Coordination with CROs:

  • Manage external collaborations with Contract Research Organizations (CROs) for protein production and characterization.
  • Troubleshoot challenging proteins and ensure timely delivery of results.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams including structural biologists, assay development scientists, and therapeutic project leads.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and results effectively to internal stakeholder.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Biophysics, or related field with at least 3–5 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Candidates with an M.S. or B.S. degree and significant hands-on experience will also be considered.

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven track record in recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization.
  • Hands-on experience with biophysical techniques such as BLI or SPR is required.
  • Familiarity with antibody engineering or bispecific design is strongly preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills for troubleshooting complex protein-related challenges.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail for documentation in electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Desired Skills:

  • Experience in managing external collaborations (e.g., CROs).
  • Knowledge of structural biology methodologies such as X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM is a plus.
  • Familiarity with automation tools for protein purification is advantageous.

Benefits:

The company offers a competitive compensation package including salary, performance bonuses, equity options, comprehensive health benefits, and opportunities for professional growth in a collaborative environment.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative therapeutic proteins in a rapidly growing biotech company.
